New Jersey Devils beat New York Rangers to reach Stanley Cup finals
New Jersey Devils 3, New York Rangers 2 OT NJ wins series 4-2 The New Jersey Devils advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals with a 3-2 overtime victory over the New York Rangers. The Devils will face the LA Kings in the Stanley Cup finals which will begin on Wednesday in New Jersey. It was heartbreak for the Rangers who had won Game Sevens in the first two playoff rounds and had overcome a 0-2 deficit in Game Six in New Jersey to force overtime. But Adam Henrique stuffed the puck past Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist after a mad scramble in front of the net just one minute into sudden-death overtime to give the Devils a 4-2 triumph in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference finals. It looked like it would be plain sailing for New Jersey after first-period goals by Ryan Carter and Ilya Kovalchuk produced a 2-0 lead that had the sold-out, red-clad crowd at the Prudential Center in rapture. The Rangers, however, roared back in the second period with goals from Ruslan Fedotenko and Ryan Callahan to equalize 2-2 and after a scoreless third period send the game to overtime. Forty-year-old Devils netminder Martin Brodeur stopped 33 of 35 shots to earn a crack at winning his fourth Stanley Cup ring. He has played in all three previous Stanley Cup triumphs for the Devils.
