81. Peter Wright

Job: editor, Mail on Sunday Age: 57 Industry: publishing Circulation: 1,927,791 (June 2011) 2010 ranking: 89 That sound you can hear is the licking of lips over at the Mail on Sunday's headquarters on Derry Street. Peter Wright's Mail on Sunday is in pole position to pick up readers of the now-defunct News of the World. How many go "upmarket" to Wright's paper – and how many switch to a rival red-top such as Tina Weaver's Sunday Mirror – remains to be seen. But there's no doubting who will have the biggest marketing budget. And it's not Weaver. A hardy perennial in the lower reaches of the MediaGuardian 100, the big question is when – or if – Wright will take over from Daily Mail editor and Associated Newspapers editor in chief Paul Dacre, a role for which he has long been tipped. Wright succeeded Jonathan Holborow as Mail on Sunday editor in 1998, since when its circulation has proved remarkably resilient. He has worked for Associated Newspapers for nearly 30 years – previously as deputy to Dacre and as editor of the daily paper's Femail section – overseeing an impressive Sunday operation that is unafraid to delve into areas that others may fear to tread .
