What is the source of creativity?

Where does a creative idea come from? That is the question that leading contemporary artist Doug Aitken is posing in his new exhibition at the Tate in Liverpool. In a short film to accompany the exhibition , artists from many diverse mediums give their thoughts. Musician Jack White , just one of the artists interviewed, implies that inspiration can come from our surroundings: "You can't live next to factories without being influenced by them. Living next to a train track, there's no way that doesn't influence you subconsciously," he says. So how much of an artist's creativity stems from their environment? Or are humans born with a natural flair which allows for them to be imaginative? We'd like to get your thoughts on the subject. Please post inspired comments in the thread below.
