Melissa Leo knocks out competition for best supporting actress Oscar
Melissa Leo's performance as a boxer's domineering mother has won her the Oscar for best supporting actress. Leo's success compensates her for missing out on the best actress Oscar in 2009 when she was nominated for Frozen River. She stars opposite Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale in David O Russell's sporting family drama, based on the real-life story of scrapper Micky Ward. She was well fancied for the Oscar after winning a Golden Globe for the role in January.
