Hot Tub Time Machine

John Cusack produces and stars in this likable time-travel comedy, whose script gives a respectful big-up to Ashton Kutcher's meisterwerk The Butterfly Effect. Cusack and two equally disillusioned middle-aged buddies, played by Rob Corddry and Craig Robinson, go on a sad male-bonding weekend to a ski resort, taking along Cusack's nerdy nephew, played by Clark Duke, for the younger generation's smirking take on things. A malfunctioning hot tub becomes a portal in the space-time continuum, pitching them all into the glory days of the grownups' youth: the 1980s, the era of leg-warmers, Sony Walkmans, Back to the Future and The Terminator. Specifically, it's 1986, and a television shows President Reagan, speaking live from the White House. (We cut away before finding out what's on the Gipper's mind; it appears to be that less-than-hilarious retro event, the bombing raid on Libya.) No real sparks of genius, but some reasonable laughs.
