Pig Heart Boy by Malorie Blackman

This book is set in the present. The main character is Cameron, a thirteen year old boy. He has something wrong with his heart - it is failing. His doctor suggests that he has a heart transplant, but Cameron's new heart would be from a pig. He must keep this a secret, but tells his best friend, who spreads the news. Cameron has to face many people who hate him, love animals and think he is a murderer. I think it's interesting that the events in the book, like having a heart transplant from a pig, could be real. I also like that Cameron doesn't just get a new heart and everyone is happy - he has to face angry people and interviewers. My favorite character was Cameron's grandmother. I liked her because she was there for Cameron when he was angry at his parents. I didn't like the girl, Julie, who Cameron had a crush on, because she hated him and thought he was disgusting with his pig heart. I enjoyed the parts where Cameron films himself and speaks to his sibling who is not born yet, in case he doesn't survive until his new sibling arrives. I like that in the end the reader never found out if his sibling is a boy or a girl as the book ended, because it left space for my fantasy to decide if it is a boy or a girl. I rate this book is 9 out of 10. Want to tell the world about a book you've read? Join the site and send us your review!
