Through an accident of fate, ambitious young medical student Robert Merivel is delivered to the court of King Charles II. His quick wit and charm soon find him favour with the King, who appoints him veterinarian to the Royal Dogs and 'paper groom' to Celia Clemence, the youngest of the King's mistresses. Merivel enjoys the privileges and luxuries of the royal court, until a transgression earns him the displeasure of the King and he is cast out from his new-found paradise.. This story of one man's rise and fall takes place during three momentous events in British history – King Charles II's restoration to the throne, the resurgence of the plague and the Great Fire of London. Rose Tremain's novels include Music & Silence , Sacred Country and The Road Home , which won the 2008 Orange Prize for fiction.
