Fernando Torres tells Carlo Ancelotti he can be versatile at Chelsea
Fernando Torres has told Carlo Ancelotti that he is happy to play in whichever position the Chelsea manager deems appropriate. Torres has so far played alongside Didier Drogba in a front two and been paired with Nicolas Anelka. The three all played together against Liverpool last month, although that was deemed a failure. The Spaniard, who has yet two score since his arrival at Stamford Bridge, is happy to be versatile. "It's important to understand the style of football your team is playing, how you are involved in the system and everything. This always takes some time," he said. "But, I think, once you get it, everything becomes much easier. The important thing is to have different options in the way you play. "All teams have different systems – they can play with one, two or three up front – so you have to be able to play up there on your own, with a partner or with people crossing the ball for you. "If you want to be a top player, you have to be able to play in all these situations and I'm sure here at Chelsea I will play in different positions sometimes. I'm ready for this because I want to play where the manager asks me to – I know the competition is high here." However, the former Liverpool striker did state his preference for playing centrally. "My movement often depends on the game and on the other team, if they are deep or if they leave space behind," he added in Chelsea magazine. "Normally the striker has to be on the shoulder of the centre-backs to leave a space for the midfielders coming forward. That's what I have been doing in Liverpool for the last three-and-a-half years and it's one of the things I like to do." Torres said that joining the London club was nerve-wracking as he felt the pressure to succeed. "It was similar to starting at school," he said. "You are always a bit shy when you arrive on the first day and you want to do many things – go here, go there, train well, meet everyone. But here the atmosphere was very good, they have made it very easy for me." He added that the decision to leave Liverpool was based on a desire to win trophies, something he believes possible at his new club. "In a team like Chelsea you have to be ready to win every game and you know you can beat anyone and arrive in the final of any competition," he said. " I think when you are 40 or 50 and you can look back, the main thing will be, 'What did you do as a footballer?' When people are talking about trophies and moments, you want to be in that picture – you want to achieve everything you can." Still, he believes he needs to prove himself to his team-mates and fans of the club. His goalless start to his career in London has left some underwhelmed. "I think when you make a decision this important you must be sure you can do it, otherwise it's not worth moving to a club like Chelsea," he said. "You have to have confidence in yourself and you have to work harder than everyone else because you are the new player to arrive at the club. I have confidence in myself, I have confidence in this team and I have tried to become involved in everything this team is doing from the first day." Perhaps that confidence in front of goal will come when Torres has fully settled at his new club. His family have yet to join him and he admits he has not entirely adjusted to life at his new club. "For me, of course, it's very important to find a house or an apartment and bring my family to live here with me now," he said. "It's tough in the beginning when you are in a hotel and then you just go to the training ground. You haven't got a car or anything – you cannot live a normal life – so, obviously, it's different to what you're used to. Hopefully, I can find somewhere as soon as possible and I can start living here."
