New music: Dan Leno – Wine into Gold

An email arrived yesterday: "Hello, we're a duo from south London and here's a song we think you might like." It was signed Raphael and Sophie but there was no press release, no flashy photo and no elaborate claims about the music. Just: "Here's a song, have a listen would you?" Fortunately, Wine into Gold is a charmingly frayed love song with a heart-breaking melody. But who are Raphael and Sophie? Well, I asked them. Raphael Verrion started making music in 2006, influenced by Money Mark and White Town, before signing with Steal My Oil Records in 2008. But in 2010 he met Sophie and bonded over a mutual love of Beach House, the National and the Magnetic Fields. "We just wanted to write good pop songs with catchy melodies, nice harmonies and interesting textures and sounds," he says. If Wine Into Gold is anything to go by then they've succeeded. Forget petrol station flowers, Milk Tray and 7p cards from Asda, this is all you need to serenade your partner on Valentine's Day. • You can hear more from them here . The band are currently unsigned.
