England v Sri Lanka: second Test - day one in pictures

England's storming performance in the first Test and some beautiful weather have combined to help pack out the home of cricket. Sri Lanka win the toss and elect to bowl first. Strauss and Cook open the batting for England though it's not till the third over that either of them get any runs on the board. It's also the over that Sri Lanka get their first wicket when Welegedara traps Strauss for lbw on four Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian Trott replaces the England captain and quickly gets off the mark with two runs by working a straight delivery from Lakmal through midwicket. However, in the next over the Sri Lankan bowler gets his revenge when his delivery thuds into a pad after Trott steps across his stumps. That's not a good start for England. Bell does a good job of steadying the ship in the following overs as he racks up 32 runs, giving England a total of 75-3 as the teams break for lunch Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian The teams come out after lunch and Alastair Cook, who is also doing a fine job totting up the runs after England's wobbly patch during the morning session, square-cuts Rangana Herath. He edges one of Welegedara's deliveries into the grateful hands of the yellow spectacle wearing Paranavitana. At tea Morgan is on 23, Cook on 75 and England are 165-4 Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the Guardian After tea, Cook continue to rack up the runs and looks odds on to record his third consecutive hundred ... until the 61st over. Cook tries a pull off the new bowler Fernando but top edges it into the air, where a grateful Maharoof is waiting at mid-on and takes a simple catch.
