Manchester festival: stepping out Mancunian-style

Habibat Aboyeji 17, student, central Manchester. What are you wearing? A blazer from H&M, Topshop jeans, Accessorize headscarf – and I got the shoes from a random shop in the Arndale centre. What I wear is determined by my mood. Today it’s quite good. Photograph: Christopher Thomond/Guardian Monique Egan , 17, student, Blackely. What are you wearing? I can’t remember where I got everything. It’s all my own hair, though, and I do the beehive myself. I get lots of comments about it. Photograph: Christopher Thomond/Guardian Josh Stocks , 19, student, Redcar, Middlesbrough. Define Mancunian style. I really like it. The music plays into it. Everyone is still dressing like the bands that were popular here in the 80s and 90s. Photograph: Christopher Thomond/Guardian Sheba Affridi , 32, lawyer, Huddersfield. What do you think of Björk’s look? Utterly crazy but I love it. Only she can do it. Photograph: Christopher Thomond/Guardian Ken Ralphs 51, Retired, Oldham. Who’s the best-dressed Mancunian? Shaun Ryder. He wouldn’t like to hear it, but he’s a scruffy so and so. Photograph: Christopher Thomond/Guardian Raimi Shoneye 32, salon owner, Withington What are you wearing? A funky urban T-shirt, new Duffs trainers from JD – and long dreads for years. I’m going for a young, cultural, rasta vibe. Photograph: CHRISTOPHER THOMOND / The Guardian/Guardian Steph Tope 22, Tearoom waitress, Withington. Would you ever go out dressed like Björk? Yeah, why not – I like dressing up in the right context. Photograph: Christopher Thomond/Guardian James Taylor , 25, trainee teacher. Define Mancunian style. It’s quite cool as a whole, but it depends on which area. The Northern Quarter is best; it’s much more bohemian. Photograph: Christopher Thomond/Guardian Molly Yates , 15, student, Prestwich. What are you wearing? A customised Topshop jacket, shorts from River Island, boots from Schuh. I have been dying my hair and wearing bright make-up since I was 13. Kids in the street stare at me or shout “mosher”, but most people like the way I dress. Photograph: Christopher Thomond/Guardian Gordon Cunniffe 21, Morgue assistant, Bolton. What are you wearing? Shorts from Note skate shop, Etnies trainers and shirt from TK Maxx. My tattoo is in tribute to my favourite band, the Misfits. Photograph: Christopher Thomond/Guardian Elizabeth Halliday , ‘Over 21’, business owner. Macclesfield. Define Mancunian style. It’s pretty cutting edge. I was in London yesterday and was struck by how less stylish people seemed. Anything goes here. Photograph: Christopher Thomond/Guardian Alistair Niven , 68, residential landlord, Boton. What are you wearing? This is my festival-going gear. Braces from J Wippell & Co, they cater for my era, and I’ve had the neck tie for years. Photograph: Christopher Thomond/Guardian Jamie Todd , 27, and Rory Pilgrim , 23, freelance artists, Holland. Rory, what are you wearing? ECCO shoes, which are for old people and have a platform heel that gives me a bit of height. What I call a “male nurse’s Japanese shirt”, that I got from a charity shop sale. And a bright, ergonomic Swedish backpack. What do you think of Björk’s look, Jamie? Her Biophilia outfit is stunning. Photograph: Christopher Thomond/Guardian
