Readers' travel photograph competition: June – journeys

Maria Galvin: A journey by cycle rickshaw in India can be bitter-sweet depending on where you sit. Drivers weave through chaotic congestion in the midday sun for as little as 10 rupees (12p) an hour. Photograph: Maria Galvin Stu Quinn: We had been in the Antarctic for about two weeks, pulling supplies inland in some pretty awful weather. After leaving our supplies at a forward cache we headed back towards the coast for another load and the weather suddenly cleared to reveal the breathtaking scenery around us. Photograph: Beka Kimberley Hannah Asquith: I chose this photo for many reasons: the colour, the humour, the look of patience on the man's face as he leads a line of women along the street while listening to what the first lady is saying. What is she saying? And why are they all barefoot? Reminds me of "As I was walking to St Ives, I met a man with seven wives ..." Except it was Pondicherry in southern India, not St Ives. And we don't know if they were his wives. Photograph: Hannah Asquith Matt Prior: I took this photograph on a double-world-record-breaking expedition driving a London Taxi around the world for the British Red Cross. It was taken on the way back down from Everest Base Camp. The total mileage was more than 43,000 miles, covered 50 countries and four continents. I was a passenger and I took this as we neared the end of a 12-day crossing from Busan in South Korea. Photograph: Darren Bell Donald Campbell: It's 3.30am. As the glitz and glam fades from Halloween's fancy dress parties, "Marilyn Monroe" awaits transportation for her journey home on the New York subway. Photograph: Donald Campbell Valerie Burnett: We were driving to Maligne Lake near Jasper in the Canadian Rockies. I wanted to take a photo of the fall colours when suddenly a motorhome appeared in my viewfinder. Hey presto! I had the classic North American road trip shot. Photograph: Valerie Burnett Cath Brazier, winner: I was part of the support crew for a team of four cyclists taking part in the Race Across America 2011. Reputed to be the world's toughest cycle race, competitors travel more than 3,000 miles from the US west coast to the east in less than a week – it's quite a journey! This photo was taken in the state of Kansas and it was the first time for about 24 hours that we had seen anything other than flat land. I love the bleak remoteness of the location juxtaposed with the action and colour of the cyclists and their support team. Natalie Mayer, judge: This is a beautiful image, strikingly composed. The light is great, and it has an expression and energy from both the cyclists and spectators. The inclusion of the hastily exited car with the open door gives the image a sense of a spontaneity and the perspective of the mountains suggests great distances are going to be travelled.
