Jessica Ennis and her rivals for Olympic gold: who wins if they match their PBs?
Jessica Ennis began her quest for heptathlon gold in the best possible way, breaking an Olympic record in Friday morning's 100m hurdles and leading the overall standings after two events. Ennis finished second to Russia's Tatyana Chernova at last year's World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, but opened up a lead of 218 points on her rival after the hurdles and high jump. Another of Ennis's main threats is Hyleas Fountain. The US heptathlete was a silver medalist in Beijing, and lay in second place after Friday morning's events. Ennis recorded the highest overall heptathlon score in this calendar year back in May, but can expect to be pushed all the way by her fellow in-form athletes. The second highest overall score this year belongs to Chernova, and the third to her compatriot Tatyana Savitskaya. Canada's Jessica Zelinka and France's Antoinette Nana Djimou Ida complete the top five. Ukraine's Natallia Dobrynska, the defending Olympic champion, is another who could pose a threat to Ennis, although she sits in 25th place for performances in 2012. The graphic below shows performance data for all seven athletes, including an event-by-event breakdown of their best overall score in 2012, and their career personal bests for every heptathlon event. By combining this data with the latest scores from London 2012, we have calculated the final score each athlete would achieve if they matched their personal best in every one of the remaining events. These totals are shown by the coloured bars, and will be updated after each round of competition. Click an athlete's name in the top panel to view a breakdown of their best performances in the two tables at the bottom of the graphic, and move your cursor over the values to see extra information, such as the meet where a result was recorded and the year in which a personal best was set.
