The Mellops Strike Oil by Tomi Ungerer - review
At first glance this book looks very dated and rather unappealing, with its cover and pictures in shades of brown and green, but Millie said she liked it because the pigs on the cover looked funny. The story is very detailed with advanced language – Millie tried to read a bit but found it too hard so settled down to listen to the story of the Mellops family's venture into oil prospecting. Again, I thought it was boring but Millie said she "liked the bit where the oil covered everyone up" and at the end she said it was "funny and good and I liked it". Which goes to show that children often surprise us with the books they like. This is a book which would appeal to boys and girls with its detailed explanation of how to drill for oil and the dangers therein.
