World Press Photo awards 2011 exhibition – in pictures

World Press Photo of the Year Jodi Bieber, a South African photographer for Time magazine, won with this picture of Bibi Aisha, an 18-year-old woman from Oruzgan province in Afghanistan. Aisha's story began when she fled back to her family after complaining of violent treatment from her husband. The Taliban arrived one night demanding that she face justice and Aisha's brother-in-law held her down while her husband sliced off her ears and then cut off her nose. Aisha was abandoned, but later rescued by aid workers and the US military. After time in a women's refuge in Kabul, she was taken to the US, where she now lives. Jury chair David Burnett said about the photo: 'This could become one of those pictures – and we have maybe just 10 in our lifetime – where if somebody says "you know, that picture of a girl" you know exactly which one they're talking about' Photograph: Jodi Bieber/Institute for Time Arts and Entertainment stories, second prize Daniele Tamagni, a freelance photographer based in Italy, won with the series The Flying Cholitas, about the sport of lucha libre (Bolivian wrestling) Photograph: Daniele Tamagni Contemporary Issues singles, second prize Ed Kashi from the US won with this portrait of nine-year-old Nguyen Thi Ly, who suffers from Agent Orange disabilities, in Da Nang, Vietnam Photograph: Ed Kashi Portraits singles, second prize Photographer Joost van den Broek, based in the Netherlands, won with this photo of a cadet on the Russian tall ship Kruzenshtern Photograph: Joost van den Broek Sport stories, first prize Adam Pretty photographed Thomas Daley of Britain competing in the preliminary of the men's 3m springboard diving event during the Youth Olympics at Toa Payoh swimming complex, Singapore, on 22 August 2010 Photograph: Adam Pretty/AFP/Getty Images Photograph: Adam Pretty/Action images Daily Life singles, first prize Omar Feisal from Somalia shows us a man carrying a shark through the streets of Mogadishu, Somalia, 23 September 2010 Photograph: Omar Feisal Daily Life stories, first prize Martin Roemers from the Netherlands won with his series Metropolis, about life in megacities Photograph: Martin Roemers/AP Daily Life singles, third prize Reuters photographer Andrew Biraj, based in Bangladesh, won with this picture of an overcrowded train approaching a station in Dhaka, 16 November 2010 Photograph: Andrew Biraj General News singles, first prize Riccardo Venturi from Italy shows us Old Iron Market burning in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on 18 January 2010 Photograph: Riccardo Venturi Photograph: Action images Nature singles, second prize Reinhard Dirscherl, a German freelance photographer, won with this picture of Atlantic sailfish attacking Spanish sardines, off the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico Photograph: Reinhard Dirscherl Nature stories, second prize National Geographic photographer Stefano Unterthiner from Italy has won with this picture of Whooper swans at dawn, taken in Hokkaido, Japan in January 2010 Photograph: Stefano Unterthiner Nature stories, third prize Christophe Archambault won with his dramatic series shot in the ash-covered village of Cemoro Lawang near the Mount Bromo volcano in Indonesia's Java island.
