New music: Kaiser Chiefs – Little Shocks

Six years ago Kaiser Chiefs were one of the biggest bands in the UK. Their debut album, Employment, sold more than a million copies and won them three Brit awards and a Mercury prize nomination. In 2007, they had their first UK No 1 with Ruby and played a homecoming show at Elland Road in Leeds before returning to the studio with Mark Ronson to work on another record. However, the resulting album, Off With Their Heads, was a relative failure (the second single peaked outside the UK top 100) and the band went on hiatus, with singer and stubborn waistcoat-wearer Ricky Wilson turning his hand to TV presenting. Well, fear not, because the Kaisers are back with the first single from their as yet untitled fourth album. Good things you should know about Little Shocks: it doesn't feature any "la, la, la", "na, na, na" or "ruby, ruby, ruby" singalong bits, and though it has a chorus it's not as "festival friendly" as their previous singles. What it does have, however, is a fantastically creepy keyboard riff, some brilliantly off-kilter drumming from songwriter Nick Hodgson and the word "ruffian" in the first verse.
