Books Festival deckchairs: send us your quotations
Get ready people. We're now a scant month away from the festival that will define the summer: two weeks of sparring and soaring; a programme starring participants from around the globe, packed with unmissable events running from morning till late into the night. Yes! The Edinburgh International Books Festival – an Olympics, if you will, of the mind – opens its doors on 11 August, and we will, of course, be keeping those of you who can't make it liberally supplied with podcasts, videos, webchats and news for the duration. At the festival last year, the Guardian supplied a bunch of deckchairs, each bearing a brief legend from a great work of literature (as in the picture, above). This year we're looking for your suggestions for the fragments of literature which will be literally part of the furniture in Charlotte Square Gardens come August. The only stipulations are that the quotations should be taken from the work of an author appearing at the festival (we've pulled out some of the major names below, but check the programme for a full list of attendees), and that they should be between five and 15 words long. For a flavour of what we're after, here are some that made the grade last year: "I opened a book and in I strode. Now nobody can find me" (from I Opened a Book by Julia Donaldson) "Stories make you think and dream; books make you want to ask questions" (from I Believe in Unicorns by Michael Morpurgo) "Literary critics make natural detectives" (from Possession by AS Byatt) Post your suggestions below the line and we'll pick our favourites; we're looking for four in total, and if yours is chosen, we'll send you a deckchair. Let the games begin!
