Keane: Night Train

A stopgap EP recorded while touring their last album, this nevertheless serves as an effective rejoinder to all those who had written Keane off as landfill indie detritus. Only "My Shadow" follows the piano ballad formula that established their dreary reputation. Elsewhere, we get glittering synth-pop ("Your Love"), shadowy instrumentals ("House Lights") and stand-out "Looking Back", which corrals the Rocky theme and a guest turn from Somalian-Canadian rapper K'naan into a triumphal soul groove. Nothing here will frighten the horses, but it shows that a little playfulness can go a long way.
