BBC1's The Food Inspectors is dish of the day, beating ITV's football build-up

More than 5 million people gobbled up the first course of BBC1's The Food Inspectors, just beating the build-up to ITV1's live England football coverage on Wednesday evening. The Food Inspectors, fronted by Chris Hollins and Matt Allwright, had 5.1 million viewers, a 24.1% share of the audience betweeen 7.30pm and 8pm on Wednesday. ITV1's coverage of England's 3-2 defeat by Holland – the first (and possibly only) match with Stuart Pearce in charge following Fabio Capello's resignation – averaged 6.6 million viewers between 7.30pm and 10.10pm, a 28.1% share. Live coverage of the match, which kicked off at 8pm, averaged 7.5 million viewers. But the first half hour of pre-match build-up could only manage 4.8 million against The Food Inspectors. Lord Sugar not involved BBC2's new series The Fisherman's Apprentice with Monty Halls began with 1.7 million viewers, a 7.3% share, between 8pm and 9pm, including 57,000 on the BBC HD channel. The first of a six-part series in which Halls attempts to become a traditional Cornish fisherman, it beat Channel 5's Big Body Squad, which had 1.2 million viewers (5%) and the last of Channel 4's three-part Daddy Daycare, which could only manage 1 million viewers (4%). Also at 8pm, BBC1's school drama Waterloo Road earned less than top marks with 4.1 million viewers, a 17.1% share. Satire beats sitcom Channel 4's 10 O'Clock Live was watched by a total of 1.1 million viewers, a 6% share, between 10pm and 10.55pm. It had the better of BBC2 sitcom Roger and Val Have Just Got In, which had 700,000 viewers (3.5%) between 10pm and 10.30pm, including 38,000 viewers on BBC HD. Channel 5's Law and Order: Criminal Intent, had 1.2 million viewers (6.7%) between 10pm and 10.55pm. One in the oven With just five cooks left, BBC1's MasterChef was watched by 3.8 million viewers, a 15.2% share, between 9pm and 10pm. MasterChef lost out to ITV1's live football but beat Channel 4's One Born Every Minute, which had a total of 3.4 million viewers (13.6%) between 9pm and 10pm. At the same time on BBC2, the Wonderland documentary Two Jews on a Cruise had 1 million viewers (4.1%), including 20,000 viewers on BBC HD.
