Cardiff today – Christmas news catch-up and NYE blogging hangover

Good morning Cardiff and welcome back to business as usual on the Guardian Cardiff blog. Today, you can hear the sounds of the new year coming to Cardiff as I go out with Cardiff Street Pastors to find out more about what they do on one of the busiest nights of the year in the city. What's on this year? Tell us about your community event and we'll add it to the calendar on the front of this blog. Just email details to [email protected] or tweet us @GdnCardiff. Post Christmas news catch-up In case you're just catching up with local news after the Christmas break out of the city – the main news stories you've missed are the obvious white stuff affecting transport systems – resulting in an unprecedented call-out for help with getting hospital staff to work which received national coverage - further meetings with community leaders are planned ; five Cardiff men arrested on suspicion of terrorism in relation to an alleged 12-man UK-wide plot, and recently two Cardiff councillors on the city council's executive board have turned against the coalition to criticise the officers' handling of the transport network during the snow bout. Elsewhere in the news and on the web today Neil McEvoy, leader of the Plaid Cymru group gives his 2020 vision for the city as part of a series from the council's four party leaders. McEvoy said he would demolish the prison in the city centre to make way for new developments. He writes for yourCardiff: "The site of Cardiff Prison also presents an exciting opportunity in the longer medium term. The prison should be moved along the M4, giving the opportunity for a Women's Prison in Wales. "The remaining real estate could be a fantastic mixed development for business and residents, right in the heart of Cardiff. The planning gain from such development could be used to restore Cardiff's canals, which still run under the ground. What a city we could then have, more vibrant, more attractive with millions more tourists flocking here to sample South Walian hospitality." More hangovers from New Year's Eve in Cardiff – Andrew Wilcox is shocked by the lack of pubs open in the city centre on the big night – he writes about it on his blog here. The Joy Collective looks at what's on store for Cardiff on the live music scene this January. Ever thought of taking the 364 project? Claire Scantlebury tells us why she's on the photographic mission this year on her blog.
