The acute trust is responsible for three teaching hospitals: St Bartholomew's, The Royal London and The London Chest Hospital. The trust is undergoing what it believes to be the largest and most complex hospital redevelopment project in the world. The £1bn programme will replace many of the hospitals' ageing buildings with state-of-the-art healthcare facilities. The new Royal London, due to open in late 2011, will be Britain's largest new hospital, providing general and specialist services to the population of east London and beyond. The historic buildings of Barts, Britain's oldest hospital, will be refurbished, alongside a major new building, to create a cancer and cardiac centre of excellence, due to open in 2015.
