It has been available nationwide since 2000. There is corresponding public services covering Scotland ( NHS 24 ) and Wales ( NHS Direct Wales ). However, Northern Ireland does not have a similar service. As well as the 0845 4647 telephone service, NHS Direct provides other telephone commissioned services through the NHS including specialised support for patients with long term conditions, access to GP and dental healthcare out of hours, support for Ambulance Services to handle their category C calls and a professional response system for times of public health anxiety. The trust will continue to deliver the 0845 4647 telephone service as normal until the new NHS 111 service is rolled out nationally by April 2013. NHS Direct has also developed a suite of online health and symptom checkers (HaSC) and a free mobile app for iPhone and Android smartphones . The trust is piloting 'NHS Telehealth Direct' with over 100 patients. The service is designed to help patients who are living with long-term conditions, such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), monitor their own health. It is also working with acute trusts and PCTs across primary and secondary care settings to pilot Online Patient Decision Aids (OPDA). The OPDAs currently available include arthritis of the knee, enlarged prostate and localised prostate cancer amongst others.
