Together with Imperial College London, it was the first of the UK's five academic health science centres (AHSCs). The acute trust covers five hospitals: Charing Cross, Hammersmith, Queen Charlotte's & Chelsea, St Mary's and the Western Eye. The trust is also one of only five generic biomedical research centres (BRCs) in the UK. It was awarded this status by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) in recognition of excellence in translational and clinical research.
